We are Edd and Melissa Moseley. I (Melissa) am from Michigan and Edd’s from England. We met in Spain 2010, and went to the US with the intention of traveling and working our way down through Central and South America. At that time, we only had enough money for a flight to Cancún, Mexico.
We stayed in the Yucatan peninsula. We got jobs and rented a house in one of our favorite neighborhoods in Mérida. We had a small backyard next to a huge park. There was a beer shop on the corner, delis on the block, a woman who washed and ironed your laundry for 2 dollars, street vendors selling hot pork with bitter orange sandwiches cooked over wood fires. We had a VW bug and the Caribbean was a couple of hours away. It was idyllic. But I digress…
That was our 20s, and we were broke (thank you student loan debt). It was a strain on our new relationship. There were fights and tears, and had to leave after a year.
After we got married, we taught English jobs in Saudi Arabia and Oman. But we still kept dreaming of overlanding the Americas.
In the spring of 2016, Edd saw a great-looking van for sale on a B190 forum. It was only 20 minutes from my parents’ house in Michigan! That’s a sign you don’t ignore. We wired the money to my parents and they snatched it up.
Many have gone before us and there’s already a lot of good advice out there. I hope that we can also offer something else to the RVing or ‘vanlife’ community, or to others interested in doing a similar journey on a small budget like ours. And there’s always Mom and Dad who will read this, right guys?
