We are Edd and Melissa Moseley. We are in our early 30s.
I (Melissa) am from Michigan and Edd’s from England. We met in Spain 2010. After knowing Edd for two weeks, he charmed me into traveling with him to Mexico where we could start a life and then travel through Central and South America. We had only a few thousand dollars between us.
But we got jobs and lived in a great neighborhood in Mérida, Yucatán. We had a small backyard next to a huge park. There was a beer shop on the corner, delis on the block, street vendors selling hot pork with bitter orange sandwiches cooked over wood fires. We had a VW bug and the Caribbean was a couple of hours away. It was idyllic.
But we were broke (thank you student loan debt). It was a strain on our new relationship. There were fights and tears, and had to leave Mexico after a year.
After we got married, we taught English jobs in Saudi Arabia and Oman. But we still kept dreaming of overlanding the Americas.
In the spring of 2016, Edd saw a great-looking camper van for sale on a B190 forum. It was only 20 minutes from my parents’ house in Michigan! That’s a sign you can’t ignore. We wired the money to my parents and they snatched it up.
We left Michigan in our camper on March 31 2017.
More and more people of all ages are traveling through the Americas, for many different reasons. For us, it’s just about finishing the journey we started when we were younger and poorer.
So I want to document our trip. I hope that we can also offer something else to the RVing, or road-tripping community, to others interested in doing a similar journey on a small budget.
Hope you enjoy.
